Berta´s talent drew attention very early. No scrap of paper was safe from her. More and more often she heard the request "Come on, Bertel! Draw me!".

In May 1921 she entered the Marienhöhe Institute, a boarding school for girls.

Hardly eighteen, she took the train for Munich to take the entrance exams at the Academy of Applied Arts.

"Up to now I don´t like being in Munich at all, I feel terribly lonely", complained Berta Hummel to her parents after six days in the big city.

Professors and students without exception testified that her talent in every way equaled her eagerness to study, be it water-colors or oil paintings, be it collages, paintings of animals, landscapes or still lifes. She was especially good in caricature.
